Magnetostrictive sensors are non-contact and wear-free, offering high resolution, high accuracy, high stability, high reliability, fast response time, and long service life. These sensors require no recalibration or regular maintenance.

In ferromagnetic materials, a change in magnetization direction alters the lattice spacing of the material, resulting in changes to its length and volume—this phenomenon is known as magnetostriction, also referred to as the Wiedemann effect. Its inverse is called the Villari effect.

Applications of magnetostrictive sensors include:
Position presetting and feedback for piston positions in flange- or threaded-end servo hydraulic cylinders; position presetting and feedback for servo pneumatic cylinder pistons; position control and feedback for grinding machines; position presetting and feedback for casting and forging presses; position control and feedback for other machinery such as gantry-type machine tools; position presetting and feedback for oil cylinders in tunnel boring machines, shield machines, and coal mining equipment; position control and feedback for lifting machinery; position presetting and feedback for oil cylinders in steel rolling mills and other metallurgical equipment; position control and feedback for blow molding machines; position presetting and feedback for injection molding machines; adjustment of railways and bridges; water level detection and sluice gate control; position control and feedback for woodworking machinery; position presetting and feedback for cylinder fluid levels; position control and feedback for liquid levels in chemical containers; drinking water and wastewater treatment systems; geodetic surveying systems; position presetting and feedback for gate opening; and measurement of oil cylinder fluid levels.
