They are actually equivalent to a potentiometer. In layman's terms, it is also called: sliding rheostat. The output voltage is 0-5V depending on the voltage supplied by it. That is, if the customer's power supply voltage is 5V, the output is directly 0-5V. If the supply voltage is 10V, the output is 0-10V. If the supply voltage is 24V, the output is 0-24V.
